December 2024 Trackies update

As usual, this year has been a busy one for Trackies.

The Backbay Boardwalk was a major project, repairing after storm damage, with the added push to have it available as a bypass during the Shared pathway construction. Achieved!   This was only possible with the dedicated team working daily when low tides allowed, a magnificent effort.

The Lincoln Downs tracks work (not yet available to the public) has continued during the year, between other commitments.  Despite the 45 minutes walk to the 'coalface', a good team has enjoyed the challenge.

Tanekaha Tracks are regularly upgraded, keeping ahead of the muddy patches has proven to be difficult but there is a hope to be able to cover some areas with gravel next year.  The new pathway to the Kauri dieback cleaning station by the swingbridge is looking awesome, and has stopped the mud being tramped in, thus reducing the risk of Kauri dieback.  A bridge will be constructed to replace the two plank crossing.

Trackies assisted in the clearing of the old Information Centre site, planting of sand dunes, and many other community activities.

The Maintenance team continues to keep our local tracks tidy, including removing frequent windfall obstructions.  Climbing asparagus is a problem, quite a tripping risk, so the spraying on track edges is necessary.

The Tracks Trust regretfully accepted resignations from long standing Trustees, Gordon Hosking and Roger Ashford, both of whom were foundation members.  Their tireless mahi set a high bar which current Trustees will strive to reach. It is because of dedicated folks like these, that the Trackies have continued to be a respected community asset. New Chairperson Mike Hay can be reached on the Trackies email tracksinmangawhai@gmail.com and on phone number 027-900-5172.

It has not been 'all work and no play'.  At the end of every work session is coffee and cake, provided by a wonderful Trackie wife (every week!)  A Pot Luck dinner mid year and Christmas BBQ are welcome social gatherings.
